The Black Dragon readied himself for the Duel, landing upon and engraved
dais atop a
high ridge that faced the entrance to the Dragon's Den.
He had proven himself to be the most skilled of the Black clan to challenge
the Red
Dragons for control of the Dragons Den and the right to be called Dragon
Supreme.
Gazing downward into the bowl of the Den he watched the Supreme Dragon
of the Red
Clan land on the raised Dais of the Defender readying himself for the
Duel at hand.
The Black Dragon knew he was at a disadvantage until he was inside the
Den. The
initial dive to gain entrance had always been the most perilous moments
for all
challengers in every Duel. But that was the nature of the Duel...
Challenge and Defend.
In the old days the fight for control of the Den too often was a frantic
battle of
fire and talons with no rhyme, reason, or honor. But times had changed
for all
Dragonkind... today, win or loose, to Duel in the Dragon's Den was
a testament of
Honor.
A moment after the Red Dragon stood ready from his Defensive position,
the Black
Dragon, as the tradition of the Duel instructs, bellowed his challenge
in the form
of a fire ball that struck just above the outside edge of the entrance.
The Red Dragon responded in kind accepting the challenge and signaled
with a blast
of fire into the bowl of the Den near the base of the Challenger's
ridge.
At the moment the Red Dragon's blast impacted the Black Dragon leaped
into the
air and began his perilous dive into the Dragon's Den.
No Dragon could hold the Den forever...
perhaps today he would have his moment as Dragon Supreme.
